I suppose you could say that I am a fan of postmodern art because I really like some of the postmodern visual strategies. Appropriation and recontextualization are very appealing to me because they are most often used to express irony, which can be an effective form of propaganda that we saw in several of our posters last month. One of the most common examples I can think of today for appropriation is the re-use of the Uncle Sam "I want YOU" poster that has been used for various other campaigns and internet sites.
The explosion of memes in the last year is another example of
appropriation. Even though some may seem stupid, they become a symbol to
people across the country and get re-used with the creation of new
ideas. Here is one of my favorites from last year, McKayla Maroney is unimpressed face.
